Here follows the simple steps on how to use an irc fserve:
1) In the channel you will see fserve 'adverts' like the one below
<Kwyjib0> (File Servers Online) Triggers: (!Kwyjibo & !KwyMame) Snagged: (10.52Gb in 14918 files) Min CPS: (500b/s) Record CPS: (2.8Kb/s by __mar) Online: (0/3) Sends: (0/1) Queues: (0/30) Accessed: (42140 times) Note: (Take A Goosy Gander, Serving Roms For Various Systems)
2) The important bit here is what follows after the Triggers: The & denotes seperate triggers so you can only use one at a time e.g !Kwyjibo for general emulation roms and !KwyMame to access the mame roms. Different people set up different triggers for their systems, some people have it all in one, just make sure you only use the one trigger and not type !Kwyjibo & !KwyMame in one line and this will be ignored.
3) Once you type the trigger the fserve will attempt to DCC chat with you. Click accept and you are now in the fserve. Some people have an introduction text for people entering the fserve, be sure to read this as it's usually the rules of the fserve, breaking them will often earn you a ban from that particular fserve.
4) The next thing you should do use the dir command to see a directory listing. You will be presented with something resembling the following:
<Kwyjib0> EMULATORS
<Kwyjib0> GENESIS
<Kwyjib0> NINTENDO
<Kwyjib0> N64
<Kwyjib0> SUPER NINTENDO
<Kwyjib0> Intro.txt
5) Everything you see in caps is a directory so for example GENESIS is a folder that contains genesis roms. To enter a directory you use the cd (change directory) command. So for example if you wanted to get your hands on some genesis roms you would type the following:
cd genesis
6) Now you are in the genesis directory. Again use the dir command to view the contents of the folder. Please note some people split there roms into alphabetical folder so if you see a listing of caps letter then use the cd command to enter the relevent folder e.g if you wanted Aliens then use
cd a
Otherwise when you type dir you will see a long listing of file names with their extension (about 90% of the time it will be .zip) and their file size. Look through the list for a game(s) that takes your interest. If you ever want to go back up a level in the fserve (e.g from the genesis back to the root so you can goto the SUPER NINTENDO dir) then use the
cd.. command
7) Once you see what you fancy use the get command followed by the filename BUT NOT THE FILE SIZE. so for example if you did want aliens then type get aliens.zip
8) You will then either see 1 of 2 messages:
Sending aliens.zip OR All send slots are currently in use, queuing aliens.zip in slot (x) where x is variable depending on how many queue slots are currently in use.
9) Different fserve's have different amount of send slots, queue slots and number of queue slots allowed per user so be aware of this.
10) Once your file is queued you don't need to keep requesting it AND you DON'T need to stay in the fserve, just the channel it's running in, so when done close the DCC chat window. Once a send slot becomes available your requested file will be sent over so make sure you have auto accept set to on.
THAT'S IT, enjoy your roms!!
DO NOT MESSAGE THE ACTUAL NICK OF ANY SERVER WITH TRIGGERS, type it in the channel the server is connected to...
